1999 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All of this makes 1999 an interesting year in pickup trucks.  there are a host of significant changes to the dodge ram line for 1999. Interiors have been given a thorough makeover. A passenger-side air bag that can be switched off is now available. A removable storage container has been added under the rear seats of the quad cab. Five engines are offered: the standard 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and a new cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available.  both of the popular v8 engines were upgraded last year. Fuel economy is up five percent and service intervals are down to 15,000 miles. Power was raised from 215 horsepower to 235 horsepower on 5-speed models, with 460 pounds-feet of torque versus 440 last year. Automatics now have 215 horsepower, up from 180 last year, with 420 pounds-feet of torque.  standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. Regular-length beds are 6 1/2 feet long, optional long beds are 8 feet long. Improvements include a new keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a new cassette and cd sound system option. Leather seats are available on slt versions. A new sport plus package comes with 17-inch wheels and tires, suspension upgrades and a 5. 9-liter v8 with sport exhausts.  a number of under-the-skin upgrades have been made, including electrocoated frame paint, and new exterior and new interior colors are available. The sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. This year there is an even bolder front end with a new grille design and clear-lens lamps on the ram sport, and a new color, solar yellow, is added to the palette.  the new quad cab design is alleged to be as strong as a conventional pickup body shell even though it does not have a pillar between the doors. To improve structural rigidity, dodge engineers designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts. interiorthe ram quad cab is about cavernous space. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. For 1999, the ram comes with reduced-force air bags with a lockout for the passenger side.  in the wide-open quad cab doorway, the designers have integrated the front seat belts into the seats themselves. Among other things, this gets rid of a lot of messy hanging belts. The console has also been redesigned. Other interior features for 1999 include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system.  the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer.  the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not comfortable for adults on long trips. The rear seat is fitted with two shoulder belts and one lap belt. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo.  for 1999, the power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs, one with and one without trip computer. On all models, a new rotary headlamp switch replaces the former pull switch design on the left side of the dash. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. This is a great engine for heavy-duty use. The manual adds flexibility in off-road situations. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The high ground clearance also makes loading and unloading cargo more difficult. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments.  braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, was exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability.  the other thing that may have improved is the build quality. Improvements to the instrumentation, new powertrain and body combinations have made it better. A crossover suv with big utility. introductionthe crossover suv market is growing by leaps and bounds. While chrysler corporation has had an offering in this segment since 2004 in the form of the chrysler pacifica, dodge has never had a car-based crossover. Unfortunately, it is neither as refined nor as powerful as the newer v6s offered by several competitors. It also has several unique storage solutions that owners will find useful. These include a bin under the front passenger seat, storage under the floor in the second row and behind the last row of seats, a dual glove box with dodge's chill zone that cools soda cans, and all the usual cubbies up front, including a fairly deep center console. While the sxt is the value leader, the r/t has a few appealing interior and exterior touches. The se is exclusively front-wheel drive (fwd), while the sxt and r/t models are offered with fwd or all-wheel drive. The sxt and r/t models use chrysler's 3. 5-liter v6. A rear seat video group 1,195) includes an eight-inch video screen, wireless headphones and video remote control, six premium speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier. The premium speaker group 495) adds six premium speakers with a subwoofer and a 368-watt amplifier. The sxt awd 24,905) also gets performance steering, performance suspension, fog lamps, and p225/55r19 tires on aluminum wheels.  options start with the sxt flexible seating group 995), which includes a third-row 50/50 folding/reclining seat, second-row 60/40 tilt 'n slide rear seat, and three-zone temperature control (including the rear). Convenience group i 695) includes a cargo compartment cover on five-passenger vehicles, interior air filter, driver and front passenger lower led lamps, front and rear aimable led lamps, a roof rack, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and a universal garage door opener. The chrome appearance group 1,420), which is available for only the fwd sxt, includes 19-inch chrome-clad wheels, fog lamps, and performance steering and suspension. Included in entertainment group ii 2,495) are six premium speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier, a navigation system with 7-inch screen, dodge's mygig multimedia infotainment system, dodge's uconnect hands-free cell phone link, and a rearview camera. The premium convenience group 895) has dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, uconnect, and remote engine starting. It's basically a stretched, widened and strengthened version of the global c platform that underpins the dodge avenger and chrysler sebring. It's also related to the platform that is the basis for the dodge caliber, jeep patriot and jeep compass. In a vacuum, the look might be described as bold. Actually, it runs the full width of the vehicle and is flanked on either side by integrated fog lights on the r/t model (fog lights are optional on other models). The roofline flows nicely from the windshield, curving down slightly front to rear. The taillights themselves feature two 'war paint' chrome stripes and the tailgate is made out of a composite material to reduce weight. The rear bumper has an integrated step pad that matches the height of the load floor. In overall dimension, it is only slightly shorter than the ford explorer, and it's actually longer than such seven-passenger crossover competitors as the toyota highlander, subaru tribeca and hyundai veracruz. It's about six inches shorter than the pacifica. While there is still evidence of the cheap plastic that has plagued recent dodge releases, there are also more soft-touch materials that look and feel more substantial than those of the dodge caliber, for instance. The improvement is most evident in the r/t model, which has a black dash center section that, while plastic, looks good and feels better than the plastic center stack in the se and sxt models.  that center stack contains an easy-to-use climate control system with three knobs and eight buttons. The radio can be a little complicated, especially when ordered with the available mygig infotainment system, which includes a navigation system and a hard drive to hold songs, pictures and map information. The radio and navigation controls are set low, with many buttons that will take some time to learn. 2008 dodge avenger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size sedan is like a scaled-down charger. introductionthe dodge avenger replaces all models of the old dodge stratus cab-forward front-drive sedan with an all-new chassis, body, suspension and powertrain lineup. It comes with a host of new standard equipment items never before seen in this segment and a wide range of options. It will compete at the heart of the american market with the honda accord, nissan altima, toyota camry, ford fusion and pontiac g6, among others.  the avenger shares all of its major mechanical systems and components with the chrysler sebring, although it is by no means just a clone. The avenger chassis shared with the sebring was designed from the beginning for a convertible as well as a sedan, and that means that it is extraordinarily stiff and strong compared to the old stratus sedans, 1. 7 times stiffer in twisting and 1. 6 times stronger in bending. It's also designed to meet all of the coming crash regulations aimed at pedestrian safety and get multiple five-start crash ratings, too.  the sibling entry, the chrysler sebring, although it starts at about the same price, is a rounder, more traditional design for a different customer. The sxt's performance can be boosted considerably with the optional 2. 7-liter v6 engine that will also run on e85 ethanol fuel. The r/t comes with the 3. 5-liter v6 engine and a new six-speed overdrive automatic transaxle. The avenger is front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive will also be available. lineupthe dodge avenger comes in three models the base se model, the middle sxt version, and the high-performance r/t.  later in the model year, avenger will become the first dodge-brand front-drive car to offer an optional all-wheel-drive system. The awd, which uses a simple power-takeoff from the six-speed automatic, will be fully computerized and capable of delivering up to 95 percent of drive torque to either front or rear wheels. The se versions have body-colored grilles, while sxt and r/t models have black-and-chrome grilles. That's how they made a dodge out of a chrysler platform. interiorbecause of the redesign, the interior package of the charger is substantially better than that of the outgoing stratus. The driver sits 2. 5 inches higher than before. There's 2. 5 inches more headroom, 1. 2 inches more shoulder room, and one inch more hip room in the front seat, and the cabin in total measures almost 101 cubic feet by epa method.  one of its unique items is the chill zone, standard in all models, which uses the car's air conditioning system to cool a bin in the passenger side upper instrument panel. An optional center console cup holder has a two-way switch that will either heat a beverage container up to 140 degrees or cool it down to 40 degrees, a very american feature.  the interior environs of the new dodge avenger were quite pleasant in all three of the models we drove, the se, sxt and r/t. The front bucket seats are widely adjustable, comfortable, and generally supportive, although the thigh support is lacking for tall drivers. A standard feature on all models is a tilting, telescoping steering wheel, not usually found in this price class, but welcome and useful.  the instruments are laid out in an orderly, good-looking array, white on black with chrome trim rings, and the brushed-metal center stack presented no challenges to understanding and use. There is even some news in the upholstery, because dodge has used yes essentials fabric treatment that is anti-stain, anti-static, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, another first. The nav system features 2d or 3d display, and can display real-time traffic information when paired with sirius satellite radio.  the rear seat area is adequate, but not more. One thing that may make the rear seat area more inviting is the optional dvd entertainment system with a small swing-up screen mounted at the rear end of the center console.  there's plenty of cargo room inside the car with 60/40 split folding rear seats and an optional folding front seat that enables carrying eight-foot-long cargoes. It's extremely solid now after the chassis improvement, and that solidity translates into a quiet cabin, very good suspension isolation, and accurate steering inputs and response.  the 3. 5-liter v6 engine in the r/t version we spent the most time in was smooth, quiet, powerful and responsive, now equipped with a drive-by-wire electronic throttle that smoothes out the bumps. At a rating of 235 horsepower, this engine is well below the state of the art in power production for 3. 5-liter v6s, but the ultra-smooth six-speed transmission's ratios help the car to feel light and sprightly. Quiet competence personified.  the brakes on the r/t are disc/disc abs brakes, and they worked extremely well, with a nice, progressive action and pedal feel, but be aware other models use front disc and rear drum brakes without abs (se), and disc/drum brakes with abs (sxt), making disc/disc abs brakes an optional extra, and worth the money. summarya three-quarter-scale replica of the charger in many ways, the dodge avenger is about twice the car the stratus was, with more style, more guts, and more verve. We really like the way the new avenger is styled and put together. It's got real sex appeal, good fuel economy, a nice-looking, functional interior with reasonable family room (although the fast-sloping rear roof doesn't leave a lot of head room or leg room), lots of ordering flexibility with three model lines, and a host of interesting options.
